Pico do Arieiro: The 15 Best Sunrise & Hiking Trips

27 reviewed

At 1,818 metres, Arieiro usually sits above the cloud layer that covers the south coast at dawn, and the road up is the reason so many trips leave Funchal at four in the morning. This page separates the sunrise transfers, which involve almost no walking, from the PR1 traverse to Pico Ruivo, which is six hours of stairs and tunnels. Departure times, difficulty and prices.

“I was very impressed with this company, we were given clear information. I had questions before the trip which were answered almost immediately. The bus arrived on time and departed within 10 minutes of the scheduled time. The walk was quite hard in parts but absolutely beautiful. I believe the trail is closed for now due to forest fires. We staying in the Lido area and the journey took 1h30m both ways. The bus picks you up and drops you off in the same order. All in all, a great company that I'm happy to recommend.Read more”

“Great small group trip, van was nice and pick up punctual. We had about 1 1/2 hours for sunrise to either sit and watch or hike, then coffee stop, then stop for nice views for a few minutes. The highlight was the last part with the hike at Larano which was stunning! It took a couple of hours or so as we leisurely hiked most of it, some parts more moderate difficulty but not hard. Got some great pictures and safe ride home. I'm glad I chose this tour”

“Our activity was a lot of fun, informative (as John our driver and guide was very knowledgeable and engaging) and took us to some stunning sites around the island. We were given ample time to enjoy each part of the tour including the 1818m peak, the Unesco Heritage site and also the breathtaking views as the dragons tail in Ponte De Sao on the Eastern most part of the Island. John was excellent, including recommending a good place to eat and the rum factory was also enjoyable, albeit this only applies to those whom drink or have an interest in the rum making process. In all, a great experience and…”
